Link's Awakening, The Legend of Zelda's first handheld game, chronicles the hero from A Link to the Past in a side-adventure. After a journey of training in preparation for any future disasters, Link is returning to Hyrule by sea when he is shipwrecked in a storm. Link finds himself on Koholint Island, a place in need of a hero. The island is overrun with monsters, and the only way to destroy the evil is to awaken a beast called the Wind Fish. But Link soon realizes that the island is itself the Wind Fish's dream, and ridding the Wind Fish of his nightmares may mean the end of the island...and himself.
