Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland European Release
Posted September 17Over a year after its release in Japan, Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland was released in Europe this past Friday.
Based on IGN's impressions, this game may or may not be more bizarre than Tingle himself.
Anyway, here's a breakdown of some core details of Rupeeland:
Plot
The main character is an unloved 35-year-old man who is given an opportunity to enter Rupeeland, your run-of-the-mill paradise of endless food, freedom, and women (Note: not kidding about the "women" part).
Stumbling onto a mythical spring, our hero is greeted by an old man with a rupee-shaped head, who explains all the joy that is Rupeeland. But before he can gain admission, Mr. Middle-Aged needs to toss large numbers of rupees into the pond until becomes the gate to his salvation.
The man people make no effort to know is then transformed into Tingle, the man people now make every effort not to know. And he begins his quest.
Gameplay
As the plot suggests, the gameplay revolves around money. Obviously, you'll need to save Rupees to put towards your lifetime paradise fund, but there's much more to it:
- There are plenty of treasures you'll be able to cash in or bosses to defeat for huge amounts of Rupees. But getting help or hints from anyone requires that you pay them first.
- In every transaction, you'll have to guess how many Rupees is enough to get what you want. Pay too little, and you get nothing back. Pay too much, and you're wasting Rupees you could've put to good use elsewhere.
- Tingle has some fighting skill (surprisingly), but not very much. Paying for protection from bodyguards may be a necessary investment.
- As part of his transformation, Rupees become Tingle's life force. Let your wallet go empty, and Tingle dies.
Other Obscure Details
- Supposedly, this is an origin story for Majora's Mask's Tingle, but the appearance of a boom box suggests Nintendo may not take this game very seriously timeline-wise.
- Tingle actually has a fairy in this game, Pinkle. Why this particular costume, I don't know. I'll also mention the time-discontinuity-thing again with the computer monitor.
There's more details and many more screenshots in the IGN link. Whether there'll be a release in the US is uncertain.
